The Head and the Heart brought their Aperture Tour to the Southside Ballroom in Dallas. Anna Graves opened first followed by Futurebirds. I have always been the type to show up for the opening bands, a lot of great music has found me that way. Futurebirds was one of those openers that sent me home ready to listen to their entire discography and their performance was one of the best I have ever seen from an opening band.
Two of The Head and The Heart members joined Futurebirds on stage for a song. At one point during a drum solo, the drummer hit a cymbal so hard that it got stuck vertically and one of the stage crew members had to come out and fix it in the middle of the solo. The band members were very interactive with the audience, photographers, and each other. This type of stage presence makes the whole show more fun and memorable for everyone, of course the pictures turn out so much better too.
I have been listening to The Head and the Heart for years now. They just released a new album, Aperture, at the beginning of May. Matthew gave his mom a shoutout, talking about how she is always guessing which songs are going to perform the best on new albums. He was also engaging with the audience throughout the set, high-fiving people on the barricade and even walking through the crowd at one point in the show.
The drummer, Tyler Williams, could be seen playing the drums with a tambourine and a shaker. I mean playing the drums with other percussion instruments instead of drumsticks. When I saw a violin (played by the beautiful Charity Rose Thielen) and a piano (played by the talented Kenny Hensley) on the same stage I got so excited, two of my favorite instruments to incorporate into modern music. I was most excited to hear the live piano parts for Honeybee and Virginia (wind in the night). Hensley and the band did NOT disappoint.
The crowd consisted of people of all ages. I even saw a couple who brought their baby and a little girl recording the show on her dad’s phone. People from young to old sang along to songs they know and love such as Let’s Be Still, Cop Car, and Down in the Valley. After the encore The Head and The Heart performed the title track for their new album, Aperture, followed by Rivers and Roads and Lost in My Mind. The Aperture Tour will carry on through the fall where The Head and the Heart will continue to deliver amazing live music to their supporters.
